I was recommended the Reliance by a friend who had stumbled past it a few weeks ago while on her way back from the flower market. What a find she made! Myself and 3 friends ate there about three weeks ago and had a fantastic roast dinner. They do a special sunday menu whereby you can have a 2 course meal for under £11. It is definitely worth visiting! It must be as it is now our regular eating preference for Sundays! There are daily fish specials as well.....try the snapper if it's on the menu...it really is to die for! The gem of Hoxton!

Maybe they've changed chefs recently? I was there about a year ago & had the burger &, my god! It was the best burger I've ever had in london with proper handmade chips & home made aoli & even balsamic dressing on the saladdy garnish thing... but I was there last week & again had the burger & it was ordinary. Not bad, just ordinary in a dissapointing way. That said, it was still better than most pub food. Overpriced tho, & so are the drinks: £4.30 for a pint of hoegaarden?? Even for hoxton that's over the top, maybe especially for Hoxton!

We all love the Reliance pub! It has always been there, it is kicking on a Saturday night, and we all have had lots of fun nights there.
But: I have eaten there twice. Both times Cheese Burgers. The first one (a while ago) was delicious. But I went there a couple of weeks ago and the burger was a joke. There was a 5 inch burger bun with a two inch burger inside. No really, you have to envisage the dimensions to understand how I felt. And there also was a half an inch thick slab of cold, unmelted cheese. I sent the waitress back to the kitchen and asked for the cheese to be melted, please. And I also said that the size of the burger was ridiculous for £7.50 or something.
The burger came back accompanied by a nasty little girl who pretended she was a chef, but really, she was a skanky little hippie witch. She told me that the burger buns were prefabricated and the burger hand made. Therefore the burger and the bun could obviously not be the same size. All she could do is order smaller burger buns. Did I want that??? So there I am sitting in the pub, gobsmacked at her logic and I find myself trying to suggest that she made the burgers bigger. But oh no, that is not an option, tells me the little girl from the kitchen, unless, she explains, if she added breadcrumbs to the burger. Did I want that? Erh, no.
So she offers to give me a refund, which I decline because I am starving. And then she waltzes off towards the kitchen, but on her way she snapps (without looking at me): it's a bloody stupid question anyway.
Appaling, I know. But kind of so bad that it's almost funny.
So if you want to have a non-sensical argument about a burger, go to the Reliance. If you want value for money, customer service and a good meal, maybe not.

PS It is still a lovely pub for drinking, of course.

Went here for first time last week and will be back - Belgian and Czech beers on tap, a couple of real ales, good selection of bottles, and nice woody atmosphere. Decent food as well - not a huge menu but well done. named after an old Thames barge - they've put the stern planking on a wall upstairs as a feature. Problems? Gets a bit crowded as Hoxton comes to life after 9pm and it's a tad expensive - £7 for bangers and mash? I think not...
