Its a great pub, but it has sadly recently suffered a sense of humour bypass with new owners renaming it 'Charles 1st' and painting it dingy colours inside. They've also taken away a lot of the charming (if tacky) Irish memorablia, fitted glaring 'spot lighting' and painted the outside an uninviting black. In the winter when windows are closed its incredibly smokey. Otherwise it stil retains some of its appeal as the punters are generally friendly locals.

This is a boozer i'll probably regret blowing trumpet about just because one of the joys of it is how easy going and off the beaten track it is. It's VERY small, with the world's smallest men's toilet, and the bar staff don't have room to swing a rat. It doesn't take credit cards, and the drinks range is nothing to scream about, but it does feel like a pub should compared to the pseudo clubby horrors or the nearby Lincoln and Ruby lounges. I had my first proper date there, and I think Mike Leigh used to frequent it (no link there , honest) and also it's opposite one of those old style 'secret porno flick' houses so there's a fairly steady stream of dirty old men to lift your glasses to from the pub tables outside. What more do you want eh?
